Dear Rotary friend,
Did you know that 20% of Nova Scotia’s children live in poverty? Fully 35% of our province’s children experience food insecurity and an even higher percentage live in families experiencing housing insecurity. The situation is more dire for children and families living in Lunenburg County. These numbers date from the pandemic, when additional government benefits reduced poverty in Nova Scotia by over 50%.
The Canadian Center for Policy Alternatives’ (CCPA) 2023 Report Card on Child and Family Poverty in Nova Scotia notes that our province’s lack of progress on poverty means that the picture for families here is the bleakest in Atlantic Canada. The CCPA also remarked that “Without [government] benefits [during the pandemic], the child poverty rate in Nova Scotia would have been 41.4%.” Pandemic-related supports have ended and the one-off payments offered in GST and carbon tax rebates, Child Tax Benefits, and cheques for $250 will not prevent local families from slipping deeper into poverty.
The Rotary Club of Lunenburg’s Support for Vulnerable Families initiative provides emergency funding to address immediate needs and promote long-term well-being. We work with school principals and guidance counsellors, social workers, and community leaders to identify and respond to needs by providing support for food, winter clothing, school supplies, sneakers, backpacks, dental care, eyeglasses, and other identified necessities.
We also help families with utility bills to keep the lights on and stay warm in the winter and telephone data to maintain connections to employment and essential services.
Last year our Rotary Club raised $10,000 to help vulnerable children and families through our community partnerships. This year, we want to raise $20,000, given the ever-increasing poverty in our county. Your kindness will help us continue to help local children and families.
Would you consider donating $ 50 (more if you can).
